Today the 'Food What' crew re-built the life lab pond. Under guidance of John Fisher and Jo, our crew member who took a pond construction class, we tackled the leaky pond. We tore out the liner, shoveled rocks, washed rocks, tore up plants and got messy! When we were done everyone was rewarded with a beautiful working pond!

'Food What' and Avance (a summer science program for middle school kids from Salinas and Watsonville area) got together and did some fun workshops. We made Tortillas, churned Ice Cream, did some composting and planted succulants!
Afterwards we got to eat papas, tortillas and ice cream with fruit!
What a fun day.

Arek and I jetted to Philly this summer to be a part of Rooted in Community (RIC). RIC is a national youth empowerment movement linking teens from all over the country working on issues of social justice and food justice in their communities. Next summer (2008) 'Food, What?!' and our bay area partners will be hosting this conference in Santa Cruz and The Bay Area! Check out the RIC web site at www.rootedincommunity.org. Big love to Deb and the UNI crew for hosting such an amazing conference.

The Food What crew got up bright and early to harvest with the Farm and Garden apprentices for their CSA; CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. A CSA works just like a magazine subscription, people pay in advance and get fresh and seasonal vegetables every week! I had tons of fun harvesting vegetables that 'Food What' doesn't grow yet and meeting the apprentices. It was powerful to see how fast 20 people could bust out a large harvest.
Nature is beautiful in the morning, try and wake up early and take a walk every once in a while!
